Newsom<\/strong> criticized the federal deployment as &#8220;illegal and unconstitutional&#8221; and plans to sue, saying the state had control without it .<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Mayor Bass<\/strong> condemned the violence but defended the right to protest, calling the Guard\u2019s presence \u201cprovocative\u201d .<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>FBI<\/strong> Director Kash Patel negatively referred to the unrest as \u201cmarauding criminals,\u201d offering federal readiness to intervene .<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Kamala Harris<\/strong>, <strong>Maxine Waters<\/strong>, and other Democrats denounced both the federal military deployment and the use of tear gas\/force against protesters.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. <strong>What\u2019s next<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Protests are expected to continue Monday (June\u202f9) and beyond.
